Compounding is the science and art of personalising medications for patients’ individual needs. Compounded medications are made based on a doctor’s prescription, in which individual ingredients are mixed together in the exact dosage, form, and strength that is required/needed by the patient.
At one point, most all prescription medications were compounded. When mass drug manufacturing came in the 1950s and ‘60s, compounding quickly dissipated. The pharmacist’s role had changed from a preparer of medications to a dispenser of manufactured medications – Stucki Family Pharmacy is one of the few pharmacies bringing this service back to health care.
